AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Jackson KY
435 PM EDT Sat Oct 17 2026

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Expect a clearing trend to continue this evening, with much
cooler and drier air spreading across the region tonight.

- Widespread frost and brief periods of near-freezing to sub-
freezing temperatures are likely tonight into Sunday morning.

- Frost is anticipated again from Sunday night into Monday
morning, especially in the valleys of far eastern and
  southeastern Kentucky.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday night)
Issued at 432 PM EDT Sat Oct 17 2026

The short term forecast period begins with the eastward propagation
of a sharp mid/upper level trough currently draped across the
Appalachians. An embedded shortwave is progged to pinch off into a
cutoff low over the Carolinas as it rounds the base of this feature
tonight, which will place Eastern Kentucky in a regime of northerly
to northwesterly flow overnight. Shortwave ridging should build into
the Ohio River Valley from the west in this same time frame, with
the corresponding surface high positioned just to the north of the
KJKL CWA. Thus, the flow at the surface will mirror the northerly
directional components of the flow aloft, and the area will be
experiencing efficient dry air advection tonight and tomorrow night.

In sensible weather terms, the growing influence of the ridging
features and the persistence of cool/dry air advection should yield
a clearing trend in the skies by sunset tonight. This, in turn, sets
the stage for efficient radiational cooling tonight, and the first
significant frost/freeze of the autumn season is likely tonight.
Expect widespread lows in the low to mid 30s, with the coldest
temperatures expected to come in the Bluegrass region and in the
broader populated valleys of Elliott and Morgan Counties. This
forecast does assume that the anticipated clearing trend comes to
full fruition, as more persistent sky cover would insulate overnight
lows. Clearing has been observed upstream in West Virginia and Ohio
throughout this afternoon's satellite imagery, and upstream
dewpoints have dipped down into the mid 30s. Together, these
observational trends give credence to the idea that antecedent
forecast expectations remain on track. As such, have maintained the
Freeze Warning for Bath, Montgomery, Rowan, and Fleming Counties.
Elliott and Morgan Counties were added to the Freeze Warning due to
their populated valleys' climatological tendency to be cold spots.
Temperatures in these 6 counties could bottom out near or just below
32 degrees. On the other hand, locales immediately next to the
area's mainstem river valleys and lakes should see the least areal
coverage of frost. The water's proximity could lead to patchy valley
fog and a little bit of thermal insulation. Nevertheless, a Frost
Advisory remains in effect for the rest of the counties in the JKL
CWA. Agricultural interests and recreational gardeners are
accordingly encouraged to take protective actions for any sensitive
plants/property that they might have in their care.

Even if the frost-under performs expectations tonight, another
(potentially significant) frost is likely tomorrow night. Clear
skies and dewpoints in the low/mid 30s are more of a "slam-dunk" by
this time tomorrow afternoon. Therefore, the potential for
additional frost/freeze headline products will need to be evaluated
in subsequent forecast packages. Aside from the frost potential and
perhaps some patchy fog over the main stem rivers, tomorrow's
sensible weather conditions look quite pleasant. Under mostly sunny
skies, temperatures should warm into the low/mid 60s tomorrow
afternoon. This should make for a fantastic day to get outside and
enjoy any planned autumnal activities or fall festivals!

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 354 PM EDT SAT OCT 17 2026

The models are in good agreement for the long-term period. This
comes as upper-level ridging builds toward the Ohio Valley. At the
surface, we will remain under the control of passing surface high
pressure systems for the period. The biggest impacts on the horizon
for the week will be the possibility of frost Monday morning and
again Monday night into Tuesday, confined primarily to the sheltered
valleys. Outside of the frosty mornings to start the week, expect
afternoon highs to moderate, climbing back toward the 70s as the
period progresses.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon)
ISSUED AT 147 PM EDT SAT OCT 17 2026

High-end MVFR and low-end VFR conditions are observed across area
terminals this afternoon, largely in part due to a stubborn broken
cloud deck that is being aided by a north-northeasterly wind fetch
off of Lake Erie. This has yielded a few embedded, terrain-
enhanced rain showers in far eastern and southeastern Kentucky.
The only terminal near these showers is KSJS, and the potential
for some light rain has been handled with a PROB30 there. The
cloud deck and precipitation potential should scatter out this
afternoon as diurnal mixing and dry air advection take root.
Breaks can already be observed within this afternoon's satellite
imagery, and the clearing trend should continue through sunset.
Clouds will hang around the longest at southern and eastern
terminals, but forecast thinking remains that they should give way
to mostly clear skies tonight. This nocturnal return to VFR
conditions coincides with a transition to lighter surface winds,
which will acquire more of an easterly orientation headed into
tomorrow. Patchy valley fog is possible overnight, but it is not
expected to impact the terminals. A widespread frost/freeze is
more likely, so once skies clear out, VFR conditions should
persist through the end of the 18z TAF period.
