Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Indianapolis IN
302 AM EDT Fri Oct 2 2026

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Showers through midday with widespread low clouds beginning to
  clear late

- Dry and much cooler weather expected over the weekend into next
week; potential for first lows to drop into the 30s across portions
  of central Indiana Tuesday morning

&&

.DISCUSSION (Today through Thursday)...
Issued at 301 AM EDT Fri Oct 2 2026

Showers will pass through the area this morning as a cold front
drops through the region, though disjointed and weakening upper
level forcing has led to lighter amounts than previously expected.

Precip will gradually come to an end from northwest to southeast
during the day today, though trapped moisture below a low level
inversion will keep the area cloudy much of the day. This along with
the low level cold advection behind the boundary will keep
temperatures from rising more than a few degrees today at most.
Skies will clear out tonight, allowing lows to drop into the 40s
across the majority of the area.

The remainder of the forecast period will be dominated by two areas
of surface high pressure, keeping temperatures near to below normal
much of the weekend into early next week, and possibly providing an
opportunity for the first patchy frost of the season next Monday
night, particularly if winds can go light to calm and allow lows to
drop even further than the current upper 30s across the northeastern
portion of the area.

Some recovery of temps mid to late week is expected with modestly
rising heights aloft and southwesterly low level flow reestablishing
itself on the backside of the second surface high, and temperatures
may creep back slightly above normal late week into next weekend for
a very pleasant stretch.

.AVIATION (06Z TAF Issuance)...
Issued at 132 AM EDT Fri Oct 2 2026

Impacts:

- Showers much of the night

- MVFR or worse conditions much of the period, with IFR likely for
about a 4-6 hour period depending upon the site

Discussion:

A slow moving frontal boundary is sagging into the area, with
showers along and behind it. In addition, deteriorating conditions
are expected with widespread MVFR or worse conditions dominating
much of the period, and a 4-6 hour period of IFR ceilings likely
with different time frames depending upon the site. Most sites
should return to VFR by late this afternoon, though BMG may linger
into the evening depending upon the progress of the front.

Winds will quickly shift westerly and then northerly as the front
moves through, and a few gusts to around 18KT are likely during the
afternoon hours out of the north.
