Indiana Winter Weather Preparedness Week November 10th through 16th
Indianapolis, IN - Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has proclaimed the
second full week of November as Winter Weather Preparedness Week for
the state of Indiana. Hoosiers should use this week to learn about
winter weather hazards and prepare for the upcoming winter season.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in association with the Indiana
Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), Indiana Emergency Management
Agencies (EMA), Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), the
Indiana Broadcasters Association (IBA), local media, and numerous
other public safety organizations, will use this week to remind all
Hoosier citizens about the importance of understanding winter
weather risks and knowing how to effectively prepare for them. It is
important for Indiana residents to know what safety measures to take
before winter weather threatens and how to stay safe if caught out
in a winter storm.
Winter weather can occur in the form of falling or blowing snow,
sleet, freezing rain and icy conditions. Severe thunderstorms,
tornadoes and heavy rain can also occur during the winter months.
Winter weather preparedness week is an important time to meet with
family members at home or safety teams at work to develop or review
preparedness plans and know how to implement them when winter
weather is forecast or occurring. Now is the time to learn how to
receive life saving warning information, build your weather safety
kit for your home and vehicles, and learn about weather terminology
and potential impacts from the different types of winter weather
hazards.

Indianapolis office wants everyone across Indiana to be prepared for
winter weather. Since it has been several years since Indiana has
experienced significant snowfall and long duration wintry weather,
Hoosiers need to be especially prepared heading into this winter
season with above normal precipitation expected. While that does not
necessarily mean above normal snowfall, it certainly increases the
odds of a strong winter storm. The NWS asks people to drive slow in
snow and INDOT wants you to buckle up and phone down".
Understanding where to get weather and road information, developing
a preparedness plan, and knowing how to stay warm and safe in the
event you are stranded or your power goes out should be a priority
during winter weather preparedness week.
