Area Hydrological Discussion #231 - EXPERIMENTAL
NWS National Water Center - Tuscaloosa, AL
324 PM CDT Thu Oct 01 2026

POTENTIAL IMPACTS: Locally considerable flooding impacts possible
WHERE: Central Kansas through northwest Indiana
WHEN: Through this evening

FORECAST RAINFALL AND ANTECEDENT CONDITIONS:
QPF: 2 - 4", locally higher (HRRR/WPC)
QPE: 1 - 5", locally higher (24-hr MRMS)
Rainfall Rates: 1 - 2"/hr (WPC)
Soil Moisture: Nearly saturated
Streamflows: Elevated to ongoing flooding (observed)

DISCUSSION...
Locally considerable flash, urban, and small stream flooding remains
possible across the area of concern as a band of heavy rainfall
continues through this evening. Some areas, including Dodge City, KS
and the surrounding region, have already received 3 - 5" of rainfall
over the past 24 hours and are experiencing significant ongoing
flooding impacts. The broader region remains highly susceptible to
additional flooding due to the wet antecedent conditions in place.
Additional rainfall and runoff may exacerbate ongoing flooding and
lead to new or renewed rapid rises on area streams and creeks, as
well as flash flooding, particularly in urban areas.

This is supported by the NWM SRF, which continues to indicate
widespread rapid-onset flooding potential, along with locally
high-magnitude hydrologic responses over the next 12 hours,
particularly across Kansas. Given the recent rainfall, expected
rainfall rates, and saturated antecedent conditions, significant
hydrologic responses appear likely, with locally considerable
flooding impacts possible, especially in urban areas and other
flood-prone locations.
