.KEY MESSAGES...

- Due to cloud cover and drizzle/shower potential highs may
struggle to reach 80 in some places again today and could
  approach record cold highs again.

- 90 degree highs return by the weekend with heat indices
pushing into the low 100s once again by Sunday, if not sooner.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 116 AM CDT Sun Aug 2 2026

Models have the main sfc low splitting and lifting to the northeast
today while the weaker sfc low moves over east KY. Lingering low
cloud cover today will keep highs down once again and near record
cold high territory unless we can break out for a few hours. There
is also the potential for lingering drizzle and/or light showers.
While there is some instability present today, it's doubtful
anything that forms will be robust enough for thunder.

At this point, Monday and Tuesday are mainly dry as high pressure
moves over the Great Lakes. We'll see clearing conditions and rising
temperatures to start the week with highs back to the mid 80s by
Tuesday. High pressure to the southeast will bring back southerly
flow by Wednesday. A few shortwaves aloft are progged to roll
through on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday leading to some weak
(~20%) afternoon rain chances. The southeast sfc high and a sfc
front positioned to our north should keep these chances fairly weak
and suppressed. By Friday temperatures are pushing 90 again and into
the lower 90s over the weekend. With dew points in the mid 70s (or
higher) again by late week, heat indices push into the 100-105
degree range by Sunday, if not sooner.
